Atlantis was the fifth shuttle constructed in 1985 and the final Space Shuttle mission with Space Transportation System-135 in 2011. It was named after the marine research sailboat RV Atlantis.

The fourth track on the Gravity Soundtrack was named after the shuttle and it was originally to be the one used in the film.

TriviaEdit

  • Originally, the Explorer Space Shuttle was to be called Atlantis as tribute to the missions. Since Gravity's STS-157 mission was supposed to take place in the recent past and Atlantis was the final Shuttle mission, the shuttle seen in the film was supposed to be the Atlantis, but it was changed to the fictional "Explorer". However, the fourth track on the soundtrack that plays when Dr. Stone and Kowalski return to the Space Shuttle, is called "Atlantis" rather than "Explorer" (Steven Price didn't want to give away spoilers so he named the tracks after locations rather than events), proving that the shuttle was originally to be called "Atlantis".
